Mothering at times (read more often than not during a pandemic) can be intense and overwhelming. Each day, 100's of different needs are called to be met. Sometimes you'll have the energy + sometimes you won't. Low sleep, inadequate support, missed meals, feeding issues etc can all take a toll. When you find yourself feeling the moments of overwhelm, it's time to hit pause and get yourself grounded. You can do this with or without your baby. Creating a ritual to ground yourself daily allows you to check in with yourself, regulate and release tension.
That strawberry jam I spoke of previously? It's topping my porridge this morning. Recipe one post back. Oats are perfect postpartum, they're cheap, filling and relatively quick to prepare - if you have a pressure cooker or slow cooker, oats are an easy set and forget meal. They can be topped with different fruits and spices every day to avoid boredom.
Strawberry fan? This week just gone I ended up buying a punnet of strawberries that ended up being forgotten about in the car overnight. The bag with the punnet then made it to my shoe rack next to the door where it sat forgotten for another night. Thankfully the weather is chilly so they didn't go bad-bad, yet they weren't good enough to eat as they were. Cue an easy jam that I will make again because it taste that good. You don't need to forget about your strawberries to make this recipe, but if you happen to have some that are looking less than ideal, don't throw them out!
Lord help me and every other mother out there, but *ESPECIALLY FRESH FIRST TIME MUMS*
Lochia (made up of blood, mucus and uterine lining) will be expelled from your body for 4-6 weeks after the birth of your baby. It goes in three stages from heavy to light and is a good indicator of whether or not you're resting enough to heal. You'll know you're doing to much if the lochia had started to slow down but then increases, rather than decreases with exertion. You need to slow down to give your body a chance to heal.
Find your village. Lean on family and friends and seek out new ones once out of the newborn bubble.
One of the first things you can do once your baby is born is practice skin-to-skin. If all is well, baby will be placed onto your upper stomach/ chest where they will seek out your breast. Glands secrete a smell similar to that of the amniotic fluid - baby's original home and food supply. They will "crawl" (slowly baby seal shuffle) towards this smell and latch onto your breast.
